Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The rehabilitation of Punta Esmeralda beach, originally scheduled to begin this Monday, has been postponed until mid-September to avoid affecting visitors during the current summer vacation period, said Doris Aké Sierra, the city’s Public Works secretary.
In an interview, Aké Sierra explained that the decision was made because the construction work will require closing the beach’s main entrance, leaving Playa 88 as the only access point.
The municipal government issued a public tender for the project in early July. The original timeline called for work to begin in August and finish by mid-November. Under the revised schedule, the rehabilitation is now expected to be completed during the first half of December, ahead of the next vacation season.
The project aims to improve accessibility and overall conditions at the beach for both residents and visitors. Planned improvements include a new paved access using adocreto blocks, a guide railing for people with visual disabilities, and the renovation of the public restrooms, along with other infrastructure upgrades.
Aké Sierra said she is confident the hurricane season, which is about to enter its most active period, will not affect the project, and expressed hope that rainfall will not become an obstacle to meeting the new construction timeline.
