A woman being rescued by police officers on a bridge in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Police rescued a 22-year-old woman who was threatening to jump from a bridge in Playa del Carmen on Monday afternoon, authorities said.

Emergency services received a 911 call reporting that a woman was on a bridge and appeared to be attempting to take her own life. Municipal police officers responded to the scene at the intersection of Boulevard Playa del Carmen and Luis Donaldo Colosio Avenue.

The situation was first detected by C4 video surveillance cameras, which spotted the woman in distress. Security personnel were immediately dispatched to prevent a tragedy.

Mayor Estefanía Mercado Asencio posted on social media that the city’s video monitoring system helped locate the person at risk. “Thanks to the permanent monitoring of our C4 cameras, we detected a woman in danger on the bridge,” she wrote. “We immediately activated our teams, and thanks to the quick action of a Transit officer, we were able to intervene in time and avoid a tragedy.”

Preventive Police and Geavig officers provided support and accompaniment at the scene. The woman is now safe and receiving psychological care and comprehensive follow-up, the mayor added.

Social media reports suggested the woman had argued with her partner shortly before the incident. The rescue has prompted renewed calls for attention to mental health issues in the community.
