Cancún, Quintana Roo — Despite its official inauguration over the weekend, the Nichupté Bridge remains closed to traffic as workers continue making adjustments to the infrastructure, leaving drivers frustrated.
Many motorists who attempted to use the bridge Monday to travel between the hotel zone and downtown Cancún found barriers still in place, surprised that the roadway — inaugurated by President Claudia Sheinbaum — was not yet open to vehicles.
On Saturday and Sunday, pedestrians and cyclists were allowed access for sporting events held on the bridge. However, construction crews and machinery from the concessionaire company were still working at the site, including at the entrance to the Tajamar boardwalk.
While no official date has been given for the bridge to begin full operation, unofficial reports over the weekend suggested it might open Monday but with restricted hours, closing at night.
Hundreds of drivers who expected to use the new route Monday were forced to take the traditional roads instead.
At the inauguration ceremony, Jesús Antonio Esteva, head of the Communications and Transport Secretariat (SCT), said the construction of the distributor road on Kukulkán Boulevard that will connect to the Nichupté Bridge is expected to be completed by October.
