Cancún — Lenin Amaro Betancourt, president of the Tourism Commission and coordinator of the National Association of Business Councils (ANCER) in the Southeast, has warned about the loss of beaches in Playa del Carmen, which he believes puts tourist arrivals at risk despite the promotion of cenotes and attractions in communities.
“We lack good beaches in the center of Playa del Carmen. We must carry out the recovery of the beach area now if we want to strengthen it, because although we seek to diversify with alternative tourism, culture, etc., still 95 percent of those who visit Playa come for sun and beach,” he stated.
He indicated that efforts must be redoubled to recover the beaches, as in recent years the phenomenon has progressed rapidly due to the effects of sargassum and erosion.
He insisted that, while it is positive to diversify the offer with cenotes and community visits, it is important to prioritize the treatment of beaches.
The business sector has already been calling on authorities at the three levels of government so that, starting in 2026, the beach recovery plan in Quintana Roo is accelerated, given the rapid advance of erosion in different parts of the state.
