Special Collection Operation on Key Dates
Playa del Carmen, Mexico — A special collection of glass bottles was carried out on Fifth Avenue during December 25 and January 1, as part of a temporary operation focused on managing waste generated during the peak tourist season.
The collection took place from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. along the stretch between Juárez Avenue and C.T.M. Avenue, one of the areas with the highest concentration of bars and restaurants, as well as tourist traffic. The action allowed for the removal of a significant quantity of glass containers from public roads, one of the most complex wastes to manage during these dates.
Maintaining Order in Key Tourist Corridor
The special collection route helped maintain order in one of the city’s most important tourist corridors. According to previously released information, during holiday periods, garbage generation increases considerably in the city’s central area, particularly PET, cardboard, and glass, which can lead to visible accumulations and risks for pedestrians and service sector workers. Glass, due to its characteristics, represents an additional challenge both for safety and final disposal.
Specific Guidelines for Commercial Establishments
The special route was primarily directed at commercial establishments, which had to deliver the material under specific criteria:
- Bottles without liquids and dry
- Placed in resistant non-biodegradable bags, sacks, or dog food bags
- Maximum weight of 10 kilograms
- In the case of broken glass, it was disposed of in sealed and identified boxes
Compliance with these conditions allowed the material to be removed without incidents.
Glass Channeled to Recycling
The collected glass was channeled to a collector for recycling, with the purpose of preventing this waste from ending up in the landfill and reducing the visual and operational impact in one of the city’s main tourist zones during days of high activity.
Logistics and Supervision
The logistics and supervision of the route were handled, in the background, by the Secretariat of Public Services, through its Directorate of Regulation and Environmental Sanitation, as part of the ordinary urban sanitation actions that are reinforced during high-traffic seasons.
Commercial establishments participated by following the guidelines for safe waste disposal. The special collection concluded without setbacks and was integrated into the temporary measures applied to maintain order in waste disposal on Fifth Avenue, a key corridor for tourist and commercial activity during the year-end and beginning of the year.
