Passenger Sentenced for Carrying Ammunition at Cozumel Airport
Cozumel, Quintana Roo — A federal judge sentenced a passenger to three years and two months in prison after prosecutors proved he illegally possessed ammunition reserved for the military, authorities said.
The Federal Prosecutor’s Office identified the defendant as Roel “N.” He was arrested at Cozumel International Airport after National Guard officers conducting routine inspections spotted suspicious items in his luggage during an X-ray scan.
Officers found a magazine and ten cartridges inside the bag. They seized the ammunition and turned the evidence over to federal prosecutors, who opened an investigation.
A judge ordered pretrial detention for the suspect. In a fast-track proceeding, the court handed down a sentence of three years and two months in prison and a fine equivalent to 100 units of the UMA (Mexico’s inflation-adjusted measurement unit) for possession of ammunition reserved for the exclusive use of the armed forces.
