Over 96 Million Mexican Cell Lines Still Unregistered as Deadline Nears
Mexico City — With less than two months until the mandatory deadline, more than 96 million cell phone lines in Mexico have yet to be linked to their owners’ CURP identity numbers, according to the Federal Telecommunications Commission (CRT).
As of May 13, only 48 million of the country’s 144 million active mobile lines had completed the registration process, the CRT said in a statement.
The deadline for all users to register their lines is June 30. Those who fail to comply will lose access to calls, text messages, and mobile data, the agency warned. After the deadline, phones will only be able to receive SMS from emergency numbers and will have no data access outside of Wi-Fi networks.
The registration must be done directly with each user’s mobile carrier, either in person or online.
