Mexico City — Mexico defeated the Czech Republic 3-0 on Wednesday to secure a spot in the Round of 32 with a perfect group stage record, a first for the national team in World Cup history.
The first half was Mexico’s worst of the tournament, marked by poor passing, hesitant defending, and a lack of attacking threat. The Czech Republic came closest to scoring in the eighth minute when a shot from Visinsky hit the post. Mexico’s best chances were an overhead kick from Israel Reyes and a long-range effort from Julián Quiñones.
The second half was a different story. Luis Romo created the opening goal in the 55th minute with a brilliant midfield run, setting up Mateo Chávez, who dribbled past the last defender and slotted home a clinical finish for his first World Cup goal.
Six minutes later, Mexico doubled its lead. A pass from Morita found Jorge Sánchez, whose shot was saved, but a defensive error allowed Quiñones to pounce and score his second goal of the tournament.
In stoppage time, substitute Álvaro Fidalgo added a third after a mistake from Santi Giménez, sparking celebrations at the Estadio Azteca.
Mexico, coached by Javier Aguirre, will play its Round of 32 match on Tuesday, June 30, at 7 p.m. local time at the Estadio Azteca.
