Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Quintana Roo — Mayor Mary Hernandez hosted a dinner-dance for thousands of teachers in Felipe Carrillo Puerto to mark Teachers’ Day, featuring a performance by Los Super Lamas and a comedy show by Tila Maria Sesto.
During her speech, Hernandez highlighted that teachers are pillars of academic and social development in the municipality. She praised their vocation, dedication, and daily commitment in the classroom, as well as their role in building values, discipline, and critical thinking among children and young people.
“This dinner falls short of the gratitude I have for all teachers. You don’t just teach subjects: you shape citizens, detect talents, support families, and are the first contact with hope for many communities,” Hernandez said.
She emphasized that teaching goes beyond the classroom: educators accompany students in difficult contexts, innovate, and keep education alive in rural areas and neighborhoods of the municipality.
Elda Xix Euan, the state education secretary, attended on behalf of Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa. She conveyed the governor’s congratulations and highlighted that teachers are strategic allies in Quintana Roo’s educational transformation. She recognized the double shift many female teachers face, balancing teaching with motherhood and being heads of households.
Union leaders also attended, agreeing that recognition of teachers’ work should translate into better working conditions and respect for their rights.
The evening included a raffle of gifts such as motorcycles, air conditioners, and appliances as tangible recognition of teachers’ efforts. Thousands of teachers enjoyed the music, show, and camaraderie organized by the municipal government.
