In Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, Mayor Estefanía Mercado and Governor Mara Lezama have announced a new project to rehabilitate and maintain the Leona Vicario Park. The park is seen as a crucial social hub in the community, a place for connection, peace-building, and recreation.
This project is the fourth to be announced in the first 21 days of the new municipal government, and is one of 15 that the mayor plans to launch within her first 100 days in office. The aim is to benefit the residents of Solidaridad. The park is expected to provide not only a venue for sports and entertainment but also to serve as a symbol of the prosperity being built in the area, in line with the New Agreement for the Welfare and Development of Quintana Roo.
Mayor Mercado emphasized that the project is not just about infrastructure, but also about creating spaces that foster prosperity for all. She praised the collaborative work among the three levels of government, which has helped to secure more resources for the community. She also acknowledged the significant role of Governor Lezama, who has been instrumental in driving the transformation of the entire state. Thanks to Lezama's leadership, over 200 billion pesos have been secured for public works in Quintana Roo, enabling the realization of projects such as roads, hospitals, schools, and parks.
Governor Lezama stressed that the Leona Vicario Park project will help to rebuild the social fabric of Solidaridad, offering a place for healthy recreation and a venue for artisans to showcase their work. It will also serve as a meeting point for locals and tourists. She commended Mayor Mercado on her achievements in such a short time in office.
Doris Aké Sierra, the Secretary of Infrastructure and Public Works for the municipality, explained that the project will involve various measures to make the park safer, more functional, and more attractive. A total of 6.5 million pesos will be invested from the Fund for Social Infrastructure Municipal Contributions and Federal District Territorial Divisions (FAISMUN), benefiting around 30,000 people. The work will include demolition of perimeter walls and curbs, replacement of lights, removal and recovery of paving blocks, construction of planters, rehabilitation of the sports field, and the creation of an area for artisans.
