Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic — Jerónimo Abogado of Playa del Carmen won the silver medal in men’s iQFoil windsurfing at the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games on Thursday, giving Quintana Roo its ninth medal of the competition.
Abogado, a member of the Puerto Aventuras Sailing Club, finished second overall in the 16-race series, behind Aruba’s Ethan Aldert Westera, who took gold, and ahead of the Dominican Republic’s Samuel Pérez Hault, who took bronze.
The result was historic for the state, where all seven athletes on Mexico’s roster have now reached the podium. Abogado joins swimmer Andrés Dupont (three golds, one silver), taekwondo’s Carlos Sansores (gold), table tennis player Darío Arce (gold), judoka Naomi Pozo (silver) and Clío Bárcenas (bronze in table tennis).
On Friday, footballer Israel Tello Robles is set to add another medal when he competes in the men’s football final, securing either first or second place for Mexico.
