Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — The Isla Mujeres government has announced the Whale Shark Festival, set for August 28 as part of the 176th anniversary of the island’s founding, with the goal of promoting sustainable tourism and biodiversity conservation.
The event will take place at the Explanada Municipal and will close the anniversary festivities. The city council invited residents and visitors to join the celebration dedicated to one of the emblematic species of the Mexican Caribbean.
As part of the program, the Directorate General of Economic Development and Tourism will present the Isla Mujeres Diving Guide, a document aimed at showcasing the destination’s underwater world and encouraging responsible tourism experiences that protect marine ecosystems.
The municipal government, led by Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde, emphasized that the festival seeks to strengthen awareness about marine species protection, foster responsible tourism, and generate more opportunities for tourism service providers.
