Tulum, Quintana Roo — Authorities are investigating after a worker discovered bags containing human remains in the Aldea Zamá development on Sunday morning, prompting a major security response.
A man riding a bicycle to work detected a strong foul odor near the intersection of Itzamná and Juan Ek avenues, a busy area for hotel employees, construction workers, and tourism service providers. He found two black bags containing human remains and immediately called 911.
Police officers quickly arrived, cordoned off the area, and closed it to pedestrians and vehicles. They notified the State Prosecutor’s Office to begin an investigation.
Investigators and forensic experts later processed the scene, collecting evidence. Preliminary reports indicate the body showed signs of dismemberment. The victim’s identity remains unknown, and officials transported the remains to the forensic medical service to determine sex, approximate age, and cause of death.
The discovery alarmed workers and residents in Aldea Zamá, a rapidly developing residential and tourism area. Police maintained a cordon around the perimeter for several hours.
Authorities have opened an investigation to determine what happened, identify the victim, and find who left the remains at the site.
