Mérida, Yucatán — The Gran Museo del Mundo Maya will host the first itinerant acousmatic concert ever held outside Mexico City, featuring 10 winning works from the Entornos Sonoros 2025 competition.
The immersive experience, organized by the Yucatán Secretariat of Culture and the Arts (Sedeculta) in collaboration with the National Phonoteca of Mexico’s Ministry of Culture, will take place on June 6 with two free performances at 6:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
Yucatán becomes the first state outside the capital to host this event, strengthening ties between local and federal institutions to bring new artistic experiences to the public.
Eight speakers arranged around the audience in a closed room will create an enveloping auditory experience, with sound moving through space to build different environments and atmospheres.
The program includes the 10 winning pieces from the Entornos Sonoros 2025 call, among them “Yóok?ol Kaab” (Over the Earth) by Yucatecan composer Elías Puc, whose work engages with the region’s cultural environment.
Other featured artists include Tobías Álvarez, Gudinni Cortina, Ana Cristina Durán, Gabriela Galván, Avrora, Sofía Matus, Daniela Olmedo, Juanjosé Rivas, and Alejandro Tux, whose works explore natural and urban settings, popular festivals, and rural activities through different sound languages.
Through Entornos Sonoros, the National Phonoteca promotes cultural rights and annually invites sound creators to explore Mexico’s cultural and natural richness via various compositional forms.
The concert also reinforces access to contemporary artistic proposals and opens new spaces for Yucatecan audiences to engage with listening experiences, sound creation, and artistic experimentation.
