Gender Identity Change Discount Benefits 10 People in Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Ten people have completed procedures to change their gender identity in Playa del Carmen after the city government applied a discount to the municipal fees tied to the process, the head of the local Civil Registry said.

Luz Marinelli Carrillo, director of the Civil Registry, said the discount began in June during Pride month and that the City Council decided to extend it through the rest of the year to make the administrative procedure more accessible.

Discount Runs Through December

Carrillo said the reduction applies only to municipal fees for the procedure, which normally cost between 1,000 and 2,000 pesos. She noted that separate state-level fees must also be paid to complete the process.

So far, 10 people in the municipality have benefited from the measure. The discount will remain available in October, November and December for applicants who meet the established requirements.

The Civil Registry director said anyone interested can visit Playa del Carmen’s Directorate of Sexual Diversity for guidance on the procedure, the requirements and the agencies involved in changing gender identity.
