Ángeles Viajeros to Take 16 Children With Cancer to Cozumel for a Week by the Sea

Cozumel, Quintana Roo — Sixteen children and adolescents living with cancer will travel to Cozumel from Oct. 19 to 26 under the Ángeles Viajeros program, which offers them a week of seaside recreation and support during their stay on the island, organizers said.

The delegation will total 22 people, including the 16 minors and their companions, said Jesús Antonio Matos Ceballos, the program’s coordinator in Cozumel. The trip is organized by Mi Último Deseo A.C. (MUDAC), a nonprofit association.

Matos Ceballos said some of the participants are in advanced stages of the disease, so the visit focuses on giving them time with their families and companions, along with rest and recreation.

A Week of Activities by the Sea

The program will take the visitors to natural areas around Cozumel and give them contact with the sea — an experience that is especially meaningful for children who, because of their health conditions and treatments, rarely have the chance to make such trips.

Matos Ceballos highlighted the role of residents, service providers and others working with the program to welcome the families. He said the initiative also reflects the solidarity of the Cozumel community with people facing complex medical circumstances.

Ángeles Viajeros will remain on the island for eight days, from Oct. 19 to 26. MUDAC said it aims to make the stay a space for emotional well-being and companionship, without presenting the activities as a substitute for — or as having any effect on — the medical treatment the participants receive.
