Former Playa del Carmen Officials Summoned Over Alleged Embezzlement

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Two former municipal officials have been ordered to appear before Playa del Carmen’s Internal Control Body on August 17 to answer questions about alleged embezzlement from the previous administration.

According to official notices, the former heads of the Environment and Public Services departments — two of the municipality’s largest revenue-generating areas — are required to clarify missing funds. If they fail to appear, the administrative process will proceed to the Administrative and Anti-Corruption Justice Tribunal of Quintana Roo, and parallel criminal proceedings could be initiated for offenses against public administration.

Cristina Alcérreca Manzanero confirmed that the investigation involves a review of the 2023 public account, focusing on projects that were executed but whose financial status is unclear. The funds in question come from local revenue sources, including property tax payments.

Records obtained through transparency requests show that the Internal Control Body has also opened an investigation into possible embezzlement, but no formal complaint has yet been filed with the Quintana Roo State Prosecutor’s Office.

The former municipal treasurer, who has been notified of the proceedings, has filed multiple injunctions against the requests for clarification.
