Quintana Roo Invests 6 Million Pesos in Sugarcane Sector

Chetumal, Quintana Roo — The state government has allocated 6 million pesos ($330,000) to boost productivity in the sugarcane sector in southern Quintana Roo, officials announced.

The funds, distributed through the Secretariat of Agricultural, Rural and Fisheries Development (Sedarpe), include 4 million pesos for fuel vouchers. The first disbursement of 1 million pesos per sugarcane organization took place in July, with a second round scheduled for August under the same allocation.

An additional 2 million pesos will cover social security (IMSS) contributions for sugarcane workers, with 1 million pesos assigned to each of the two beneficiary associations.

The support directly benefits members of the Association of Sugarcane Producers of the Rio Hondo Riverbank (CNPR) and the Local Union of Sugarcane Producers of the San Rafael de Pucté Mill (ULPCA). The fuel aid aims to reduce transportation and logistics costs for harvests.

Sedarpe head Jorge Aguilar Osorio said the sector is a priority for Governor Mara Lezama’s administration. “We are responding with concrete actions to complex challenges such as climate change, market competitiveness, and phytosanitary issues,” he said.

Aguilar noted the investment complements broader efforts, including a partnership with the Scientific Research Center of Yucatán (CICY) to combat the Fusarium fungus and other pests, as well as the distribution of bio-inputs and establishment of bio-factories for soil regeneration.

“We work hand in hand with producers to ensure public resources arrive transparently and directly, creating real savings that they can allocate to other operational and family needs,” he added.
