Cozumel, Quintana Roo — Four people were injured at a hotel on Cozumel Thursday evening when the ground beneath them suddenly gave way, opening a large sinkhole in a tiled area beside the swimming pool.
The collapse occurred at the Occidental Cozumel, in the southern part of the island, as several guests were taking sunset photographs near the pool deck that borders the property’s beach.
According to preliminary reports, guests heard a cracking sound and ran moments before the hole appeared, sending the four men — reported to be domestic tourists — falling into the opening.
Hotel staff said the sinkhole is several meters across and at least two meters deep. A long crack is reported to run several meters from an outdoor pool shower to the edge of the pool, and the collapse occurred behind an orange pillar that supported the shower head. The concrete support column for the shower was left dangling over the hole.
Two ambulances arrived at the property to take the injured men to hospital.
Hotel employees have cordoned off the area as a precaution. Local authorities have not commented on the collapse, and the cause of the crack and the resulting ground failure remains unknown.
