Cancun, Quintana Roo — A firecracker explosion at a middle school in Cancun on Wednesday morning prompted a security lockdown and the mobilization of police, officials said.
The incident occurred at Secundaria Técnica No. 11 “Moisés Sáenz Garza” on Avenida Chichén Itzá. Witnesses reported that a person ran past the school and threw an object, later identified as a firecracker, which exploded, causing alarm among students, teachers, and staff.
School administrators informed parents about the incident and offered them the option to pick up their children early. In messages sent through school communication groups, the principal assured that all students and staff were safe and that security protocols had been activated immediately.
The Municipal Secretariat of Public Security and Transit of Benito Juárez said in a statement that officers responded promptly to the school’s parking lot to verify the report and ensure the safety of those present.
During the intervention, authorities located a minor in possession of pyrotechnic devices, commonly known as firecrackers, which were seized as a preventive measure. No injuries were reported, and the situation was brought under control without further risk to the school community.
The agency said it notified the appropriate authorities and activated protocols for handling such incidents. It also urged the public to report any potentially dangerous situations promptly.
The Quintana Roo State Prosecutor’s Office has not yet issued an official statement on the case, but officials are expected to provide more details in the coming hours.
