El Chapo Blames Mexican Government for Violent Crimes in Letter to New York Court

Handwritten letter from Joaquín El Chapo Guzmán addressed to the Eastern District of New York

Washington, D.C. — Mexican drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán has blamed the Mexican government for violent crimes and claimed he “did no harm to anyone,” in a letter addressed to the Eastern District of New York.

“My name is Joaquín Guzmán, who is fighting against the injustice of the courts regarding the accusations and the supposed role of Ray Donovan as district attorney and Richard Donoghue for blaming me for an enterprise that was already established and had nothing to do with the crimes in America,” the handwritten letter, written in English, states.

“The Mexican government was responsible for all the violent crimes. I did no harm to anyone. These charges in my conviction were based on a single witness in my case. I have no idea why the federal government allowed him to testify against me without evidence to take away my freedom.”

Guzmán’s criminal career is closely tied to the presidencies of Felipe Calderón and Enrique Peña Nieto. He was recaptured in 2016 under Peña Nieto and later extradited to the United States.
