Cozumel, Quintana Roo — A deer was struck and killed by a vehicle on a road in Cozumel, reigniting public concern over the vulnerability of wildlife in areas where tourism infrastructure intersects with natural habitats.
Witnesses reported finding the animal lying on the asphalt after the impact, prompting outrage among residents who say such incidents highlight the growing threat to local fauna from development.
The accident occurred at a location where locals say animal crossings are common. The incident has renewed calls for authorities to implement more effective protective measures.
Elias Siebenborn, an environmentalist and member of the group Cenotes Urbanos, warned that these accidents are not isolated but part of a recurring problem caused by a lack of wildlife crossings, adequate signage, and mitigation strategies in animal transit zones.
Siebenborn urged authorities to strengthen efforts to balance urban growth with conservation of the natural environment to prevent further incidents on the island.
