CROC Intervenes in Salary Deduction Dispute at Cozumel’s Secrets Aura Hotel

Cozumel, Quintana Roo — Workers at the Secrets Aura hotel in Cozumel have accused management of making unjustified deductions from their pay, prompting the Revolutionary Confederation of Workers and Peasants (CROC) to intervene.

Carmen Cruz Zúñiga, the union’s leader in Cozumel, described the practice as “bad practices and customs” and said hotel management had paid employees for only 12 of the 15 days they worked in each two-week pay period. The deductions have reportedly continued for several months and sparked complaints among staff.

Cruz Zúñiga said the practice dates back to the years when the Confederation of Mexican Workers (CTM) held the union representation for the hotel’s employees. CROC has since opened negotiations with the company to stop the deductions.

She said the union is seeking agreements that guarantee fair conditions for workers, with one central demand being transparency in how so-called “solidarity days” are applied. Management, she added, appeared to want to implement the scheme without fair criteria.

“We have been in constant communication, finding middle ground, and there are customs and practices that we have to work through with the company, always seeking compromise and, obviously, negotiation,” Cruz Zúñiga said.
