Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A night of celebration nearly turned deadly early Sunday morning when a driver lost control of his vehicle on Federal Highway 307, causing a violent rollover crash that left him in critical condition.
At around 4:40 a.m., the driver of a gray Nissan March was heading south when he lost control, according to authorities. The car mounted the median, struck a light pole, and flipped several times before landing upside down, blocking lanes in the opposite direction.
Firefighters and civil protection paramedics freed the driver, who was trapped inside the wreckage. After being stabilized at the scene, he was rushed to a hospital in grave condition.
Officers from the National Guard and the Public Security Department (SSC) secured the area. Inside the vehicle, authorities found several beer cans, suggesting alcohol may have been a factor.
A tow truck removed the damaged car, and traffic resumed after several hours of disruption.
