Six Injured as Two Passenger Vans Collide Near Tulum’s Parque del Jaguar

Several paramedics in dark uniforms attend to a person seated on a blue stretcher outdoors near trees and a slatted wooden structure.

Tulum, Quintana Roo — At least six people were injured, four of them taken to hospitals, when two passenger vans collided at the north entrance to Tulum near the roundabout leading to the Parque del Jaguar, authorities said.

According to witness accounts gathered at the scene, the driver of a tourism transport van with license plates 05-RE-8C entered the area at excessive speed, lost control and slammed into the rear of a van belonging to the Lázaro Cárdenas del Río taxi union of Playa del Carmen, identified as unit 87.

The crash happened at one of the main pedestrian crossings used by tourists and workers heading to the Tulum archaeological site. Witnesses said the impact was strong enough to damage a tire on one of the vehicles, while the van believed to be responsible ended up off the roadway in the brush.

Tourists among the injured

The collision caused moments of tension among passengers, most of them tourists, some of whom needed immediate medical attention. An elderly adult was among those taken for hospital treatment.

Red Cross paramedics and ambulances from the private firm RUM treated about six people at the scene, most of them visitors. Four injured people were taken to medical centers for more specialized evaluation, while the rest were treated on site.

Firefighters and municipal traffic officers also responded, securing the area and carrying out the corresponding inquiries.

Driver detained at the scene

Witnesses said the driver identified as the likely responsible party tried to leave after the crash, angering bystanders who demanded he stay until authorities determined his responsibility.

Municipal traffic officers detained the driver of the transport van as investigations continued into the circumstances of the collision and to establish responsibility.

The crash once again highlighted the risks faced by pedestrians, tourists and workers at the entrances to the Parque del Jaguar, where public and tourism transport vehicles move daily through an area with constant visitor traffic.
