Cancún, Quintana Roo — Parents took over the private Abraham Lincoln school in Supermanzana 95 on Friday, blocking the campus to protest the Quintana Roo Education Department’s decision to reinstate a middle-school student accused of assaulting classmates.
The protesters shut the entrance at 7 a.m. as students arrived for class and said they will keep the campus occupied until officials from the department, known as the SEQ, show up to hear their complaints.
Parents said school administrators are dealing with the situation and have asked the SEQ to send representatives, but no response has come.
The dispute centers on a secondary-level student accused of attacking another student. According to the parents, education authorities ordered the student back to class after a three-week suspension imposed while the allegations were investigated. The student returned to lessons last Thursday.
Mothers and fathers at the gate said they want the SEQ to explain the reasoning behind the reinstatement and to guarantee a safe environment for other students before normal classes resume.
