Cozumel’s Benito Juarez Market to Receive Comprehensive Maintenance After Years of Neglect

Municipal officials inspecting damaged roofs and structures at Benito Juarez Market in Cozumel

Cozumel, Quintana Roo — After years of neglect and lack of conservation, the Benito Juarez Municipal Market is set to receive a comprehensive infrastructure overhaul aimed at repairing accumulated damage, ensuring user safety, and restoring dignity to one of the island’s most important commercial hubs.

According to a press release from the city council, officials from the Mayor’s Office and the Public Services Department conducted a thorough technical inspection of the building. The assessment will form the basis for a diagnosis of damages and a schedule of preventive and corrective maintenance works, directly responding to requests from market vendors.

Technical Diagnosis Reveals Structural Failures

During the walkthrough of aisles and stalls, local authorities identified critical areas requiring urgent attention to extend the market’s lifespan. Years without specialized conservation work have deteriorated key parts of the building, and the current planning focuses on restoring functionality before the damage worsens.

Recycling Center Planned to Combat Waste Accumulation

As part of the renovation strategy, officials inspected a plot at the rear of the property where a temporary collection center for cardboard and PET plastic is planned. The measure aims to curb commercial waste buildup, encourage source separation of recyclables, and raise hygiene standards in common areas.

The local administration seeks to reclaim public spaces that were neglected in previous years, streamlining citizen services to revive the local economy under safe and sanitary conditions for merchants, local families, and tourists who visit the market daily.
