Cozumel, Quintana Roo — Officials presented a 116 million-peso modernization plan for Cozumel’s Malecón and Rafael E. Melgar Avenue during the second working session of the 2024-2027 Tourism Advisory Council.
The project is part of the strategic initiatives promoted by the Trust for the Welfare of Cruise Tourism in Quintana Roo (FICQROO) and aims to renovate one of the island’s main thoroughfares and its most visible showcase for visitors.
The plan includes new signage, public lighting, universal accessibility features, urban furniture, pedestrian crossings, historical elements and a children’s park, as well as improvements to the overall appearance and function of the coastal promenade.
Authorities said the avenue will retain two lanes in each direction, and the flagpole will stay in its current location in order to preserve representative elements of the island’s urban identity.
The modernization is also intended to strengthen Cozumel’s tourism infrastructure and help create conditions for cruise ships to stay overnight on the island, which could extend visitors’ stays and generate a larger economic impact.
