Cancún, Quintana Roo — MOBI, the transit system serving Cancún, will begin formal operations on the Nichupté Bridge next week after roughly six weeks of pilot testing, according to Rafael Hernández Kotasek, head of the Quintana Roo Mobility Institute (IMOVEQROO).
Hernández Kotasek said tests of the fare-payment system concluded successfully and the route is ready for launch at an official event led by the state governor.
App and fare payment
The MOBI app is now available for download on Android and iOS devices, allowing users to check balances and top up their accounts. Prepaid cards can also be recharged at OXXO, 7-Eleven and other participating stores, the official said.
Preferential fares
IMOVEQROO is continuing its credentialing process for riders eligible for reduced rates. People with disabilities are exempt from the fare, while older adults and students receive a discount. To qualify, users must obtain a credential card at one of the enrollment points set up at IMOVEQROO offices, the Institute for Comprehensive Development (IDI), and DIF facilities operated by the state and municipal governments. Credentialing is also available this week at Soriana Nichupté, a supermarket along the route.
There is no deadline to apply for the credential, Hernández Kotasek said, and riders who cannot complete the process in August will not lose access to the service or its discounts.
“This service is here to stay,” he said, adding that MOBI will continue operating and gradually add routes.
Route expansion ahead
The official said an expansion plan for the system will be presented next week as new routes are incorporated. Permanent enrollment modules will also be set up to make it easier for users to apply.
Riders who do not qualify for preferential rates can purchase a general fare card with no special requirements at participating stores. Fares can be paid through the app, with bank cards, or using the MOBI card. Those riders pay the general fare, without discounts, Hernández Kotasek noted.
With service on the Nichupté Bridge set to begin, MOBI aims to establish itself as a public transit option for Cancún residents as new routes come online.
