Mexico City — Mexican officials presented the Olinia cargo vehicle Thursday during President Claudia Sheinbaum’s morning press conference, marking the next phase of the country’s national electric vehicle project.
The vehicle has a cargo capacity of 650 kilograms and a range of more than 120 kilometers. Its platform can hold 12 crates. “Because it’s electric, the space under the platform is free and it has a trunk,” said Roberto Capuano Tripp, director of Project Olinia.
The vehicle also features folding side panels that allow access to goods from different points, making loading and unloading easier. It is designed to carry up to two people comfortably and safely.
According to estimates presented by Capuano Tripp, operating the Olinia Cargo would cost four times less than a light cargo vehicle and about a third of the cost of operating a motorized tricycle.
The production process will unfold in stages. The call for proposals is scheduled for late September 2026, followed by a registration period for expressions of interest in October. Offers are expected in November, and the process would conclude in December.
