Cozumel Officials Deny Health Alert Amid Cruise Ship Norovirus Rumors

Cruise ship docked at Cozumel port with turquoise water

Cozumel, Quintana Roo — Cozumel tourism officials have dismissed rumors of a health alert related to a virus outbreak on cruise ships, following reports of an isolated norovirus case on a Caribbean vessel.

Elias Farah Ceh, the island’s tourism director, said there is no official report or alert regarding any virus on cruise ships. He noted that such incidents can occur anywhere in the world, including hotels and ships, but stressed that Cozumel has recorded no cause for concern.

“We are monitoring the situation from the Tourism Office, but there is no alert at this time,” Farah said.

Farah explained that cruise lines maintain high hygiene standards and that while no destination is immune to outbreaks, the island remains free of cases. He added that if any situation arose, authorities would immediately coordinate with health and civil protection officials. For now, the main recommendation for those in constant contact with tourists is frequent hand washing, especially before eating and after using the restroom, as most viruses spread through poor hygiene.

“There are no cases, no alerts, but we must remain attentive and take care of ourselves,” he emphasized.

The clarification aims to reassure both residents and visitors in a destination that receives thousands of international cruise passengers daily. Cozumel has maintained a consistent record of health safety, and officials reiterated their commitment to ensuring sanitary security and trust in the tourism experience.
