Cozumel Kicks Off Sports Season With Thousands of Athletes and Visitors

Cozumel, Quintana Roo — The island has kicked off its summer sports season with a packed calendar of events expected to draw thousands of visitors and reinforce its reputation as an international sports destination, according to Tourism Director Elías Farah Ceh.

Last weekend marked the start with the third edition of the night half marathon, which attracted more than 1,000 runners. Farah Ceh described the response as a success, signaling the beginning of the sports tourism season.

On Saturday, July 26, the Mayanman event is expected to bring over 800 participants. From July 31 to August 2, the Oceanman — considered one of Mexico’s most important open-water competitions — will take place with more than 2,500 registered athletes.

“These are very healthy competitions that don’t generate negative impacts like trash or road closures, and they also bring companions. Generally, each competitor comes with two or three additional people, which translates into very positive hotel occupancy,” Farah Ceh said.

The official noted that the island has just over 4,000 hotel rooms, and each event increases occupancy by 8 to 10 percentage points.

“We have a statistics area that constantly measures against the same dates from previous years, so after these events we will be able to provide clearer numbers, but the expectation is very good,” he added.

The sports agenda will continue in September with the Half Ironman and Gran Fondo, followed by the first Pueblos Mágicos triathlon on October 18. Later events include the Full Ironman and the As Tri, solidifying Cozumel’s status as the “island of sports.”

Farah Ceh emphasized that these competitions not only generate economic revenue but also project the island as a world-class sports tourism destination.

“With each edition, we reaffirm Cozumel’s position as a place where sports, nature, and hospitality come together to offer unique experiences,” he concluded.
