Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — Organizers say everything is in place for the Luz y Vida 2026 festival, “Entre Vivos y Muertos,” one of Isla Mujeres’ most anticipated celebrations, which opens October 24 with a broad program of cultural, artistic and recreational events.

The centerpiece will be a free concert by the veteran Mexican pop group Pandora, which marks 40 years of performing, on Friday, October 30, at the Explanada Municipal.

The Isla Mujeres municipal government invited local families and tourists to take part in the celebration, which runs through November 2. Officials said the goal is to preserve Day of the Dead traditions, strengthen local cultural identity and offer new experiences to visitors to the island, which holds the Pueblo Mágico designation.

Opening night and Catrinas dinner

The program begins Saturday, October 24, at 6 p.m. with the “Desafío Zombie Run, Noche de Juventud” at Hacienda Mundaca, a recreational event billed as a test of fun and adrenaline.

On Thursday, October 29, at 8 p.m., the traditional Catrinas Dinner will be held at the Bahía del Rey Beach Club.

Catrín-Arte and the Pandora concert

Friday, October 30, brings one of the busiest days of the festival. The “Catrín-Arte, Festival de Catrinas” begins at 7:30 p.m. with the “Caminando entre las Ánimas” procession along Avenida Hidalgo, followed by an exhibition of altars, the coronation of the Embajadoras Luz y Vida 2026 and artistic performances at the Explanada Municipal.

At 10 p.m. that night, the main stage will host Pandora, which will perform its best-known hits in a free show expected to draw both residents and visitors to the heart of Isla Mujeres.

Children’s fair and Janal Pixan

The celebration continues Saturday, October 31, with the Feria de Calaveritas, aimed especially at children, on both the island and the Zona Continental. The day includes parades, costume contests, children’s shows, artistic performances and activities for the whole family.

On Sunday, November 1, the Zona Continental will host its own Festival de Catrinas starting at 6:30 p.m. at Plaza Ejidatarios, with altar displays, contests, artistic performances and a traditional fair.

That same day on the island, the “Janal Pixan, Noche de Tradiciones” will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Explanada Municipal, featuring altar exhibitions, a PIB (corn-based Day of the Dead dish) contest, the traditional Jarana de las Ánimas and cultural performances.

Closing night

The festival wraps up Monday, November 2, with “Luz de las Almas, Noche de Juventudes” at 7:30 p.m. at the Explanada Municipal, featuring altar displays, catrina contests, artistic performances and a staging of the play “A mis muertos.”
