Chetumal Traffic Officer Shoots Two Dead, Then Kills Himself

State prosecutor investigators and police cordon off a home in Chetumal where a traffic officer shot two people and then took his own life

Chetumal, Quintana Roo — A traffic police officer in Chetumal shot two people at his home and then took his own life, authorities said, in a case that has shaken the state capital.

The shootings took place around 10:30 p.m. on Oct. 20 at a house on Calle Sicilia, at its intersection with Avenida San Salvador. Neighbors called police after hearing multiple gunshots.

When officers and paramedics arrived, they found three people dead inside the property: the officer and two victims. Initial reports identified the victims as his wife and daughter, though a second account circulating among investigators suggests the second victim may have been an adult rather than a minor.

The State Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation to establish exactly what happened and to confirm the identities of the victims and their relationship to the officer.

Police cordoned off the area while investigators carried out the removal of the bodies and collected ballistic evidence from the scene.

Authorities are expected to release further details on the case in the coming days.
