Controversy Over Alleged Access Restrictions at Cancun’s Playa del Niño

Yellow posts installed at the parking lot of Playa del Niño beach in Cancun

Cancun, Quintana Roo — Confusion is mounting over the future of access to Playa del Niño, one of Cancun’s most popular public beaches, after yellow posts were installed in its parking lot — a move many interpret as a precursor to restricted hours.

On Sunday, a visit to the beach in Puerto Juarez confirmed that the parking lot remained open and the beach was busy with families and visitors. No efforts were observed to remove people or block entry.

However, the yellow posts, which appear designed to hold chains, have sparked speculation that authorities plan to close the parking lot after 5 p.m. Social media has been abuzz with claims that the lot would only operate from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Local vendors told reporters they have received no official instructions about any restricted schedule and are unsure of the purpose of the posts.

As of Sunday, no municipal authority — including the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone Office (Zofemat), which manages public beaches — had issued a statement confirming or denying the rumored restrictions.

The situation remains unclear, with residents and visitors awaiting clarification from officials.
