Charges Filed in Murder of Cancun Taxi Driver Found Dead in His Vehicle

Cancun, Quintana Roo — Authorities have filed charges against a suspect in the May murder of a Cancun taxi driver who was found dead inside his cab.

The suspect, identified as Helbert Ariel “N,” has been formally charged with aggravated homicide, according to police. A judge reviewed evidence presented by the Quintana Roo State Prosecutor’s Office through its Specialized Homicide Unit before the charges were brought.

On May 12, 2026, the taxi driver was discovered dead on the floor of his vehicle’s back seat, killed by gunfire. Nearby residents reported hearing shots, prompting the discovery.

At the time of his arrest, Helbert Ariel “N” was found carrying a 9mm firearm. Forensic experts conducted tests using the IBIS system, which yielded a positive match to the homicide of the man found dead inside the taxi on May 12, police said.

Investigators also located a loaded magazine containing live ammunition inside the taxi, which matched the firearm seized from the suspect.

Police stated that the shooting was linked to drug trafficking activities. Helbert Ariel “N” has a prior conviction for drug possession.
