Cancún, Quintana Roo — Cancún’s municipal traffic department will offer six free driving and road safety courses between Nov. 9 and Dec. 19, city officials announced, with graduates eligible for a 50 percent discount on their license processing fee.
The courses, titled “Smart Driving in Road Safety Education 2026,” are run by Benito Juárez City Hall through the Municipal Traffic Department. Officials said the aim is for residents to learn or sharpen their driving skills and to strengthen respect for traffic signals.
The program follows public policies promoted by Mayor Ana Paty Peralta, and the department said previous editions have drawn strong interest from residents in both the theory and practical sessions taught by trained staff.
Anyone aged 15 or older can sign up at the Road Safety Education Coordination office on Avenida Xcaret at Avenida Kabah, or by calling 998 189 05 10 from Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Saturdays, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
What participants need to register
Adults must bring a copy of their voter ID and a copy of a proof-of-address document. Minors must present a copy of their birth certificate, a copy of a photo ID, a copy of the voter ID of a parent or guardian, a copy of a proof of address and a copy of their CURP (national population registry number). They must also be accompanied by an adult.
Classroom and behind-the-wheel sessions
The theory class runs from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., and participants should bring a notebook, a pen and the traffic regulations. The practical session runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and requires comfortable clothing, an available vehicle and a driver to bring it to the practice site. There, participants learn to change tires and to use a fire extinguisher.
Those who complete the course can obtain a driver’s license valid for two years with the 50 percent discount on the fee. The benefit does not apply to minors, who can instead apply for a responsible-driver permit valid for a maximum of 180 days.
