Cancun, Quintana Roo — A recreational race along the Malecón Tajamar in Cancun has collected approximately 1,000 kilograms of pet food to support vulnerable animals.
The first edition of the “Corriendo por el Bienestar Animal” (Running for Animal Welfare) race required each participant to donate a bag of food weighing at least seven kilograms. The total haul will go entirely to the Miis & Peek foundation, which focuses on sterilization and birth control for animals.
According to local authorities, the organization works year-round in the state through health campaigns and public awareness efforts.
The event featured 3-kilometer and 5-kilometer circuits along the Tajamar Lagoon. Dogs between seven months and 10 years old were allowed to participate, provided they wore a leash or harness in good condition.
Miis & Peek also offers vaccination drives, deworming, responsible sterilization, preventive medicine, and education aimed at reducing the overpopulation of dogs and cats.
Actions Against Animal Abuse in Cancun
Alonso Fernández Lemmen Meyer, head of the Quintana Roo Environmental Protection Prosecutor’s Office (PPA), said the state government is prioritizing action against violence toward domestic animals.
“We have had open case files, and there are already people behind bars. Many thanks to the city council for helping us make this event possible,” he said.
The initiative aims to strengthen community participation, promote physical activity, and encourage ethical and responsible pet ownership among residents and visitors of Benito Juárez.
At the end of the race, participants received commemorative medals. Officials from the Secretariat of Ecology and Environment (SEMA) and the Bepensa foundation attended the ceremony.
