Cancún, Quintana Roo — Cancún marked its annual Founder’s Day on July 13 with a flag-raising ceremony at the Plaza de la Reforma, honoring the pioneers who transformed a sparsely populated stretch of dunes, jungle and mangroves into one of the world’s top tourist destinations.
The event, established by municipal decree, brought together city officials, early settlers and residents to commemorate the city’s founding. Cancún was Mexico’s first fully planned tourism center, launched by the federal government in 1970, and has since become the economic engine of Quintana Roo and a major source of foreign revenue.
Speaking on behalf of acting Mayor Landy Guadalupe Canché Pantoja, city official Nora Viviana Espinoza Hernández said the founders’ vision set Cancún on a path to becoming a national and international benchmark. She noted that the city’s identity is built on love for the land, respect for symbols and responsible participation, allowing the community to take pride in its past while preparing for future challenges. “Cancún was built not only with concrete, but with dreams, sacrifices, willpower and a shared desire to offer a better future for new generations,” she said.
Carlos Cardín Pérez, honorary president of the Fundadores de Cancún A.C. and a former mayor of Benito Juárez, welcomed the inclusion of Founder’s Day on the civic calendar. He said the annual observance allows residents to learn about the municipality’s creation, its anecdotes and the reasons to strive for a better future. Reflecting on Cancún’s 56 years since the first machinery arrived to build streets and access roads to the hotel zone, Cardín called for a strategy involving pioneers and founders to consolidate the city’s legacy for future generations.
The ceremony included the singing of the Mexican national anthem and the Quintana Roo state anthem, as well as honors to the national flag. Among those attending were city Secretary General Pablo Gutiérrez Fernández; representatives of the Fifth Naval Region and the National Guard; Macarena Carretero Valdivia, president of Fundadores de Cancún A.C.; and Ana Beatriz Pérez Ayala, public relations secretary of the Pioneros de Cancún A.C.
