Cancún, Quintana Roo — One person was injured Thursday morning when a bus crashed into and dragged a passenger van on Tulum Avenue in Cancún, municipal transit officials said.
The collision was reported at about 7:10 a.m. at the intersection with Nichupte Avenue, near Plaza de las Américas. Neither vehicle had passengers aboard, a factor authorities said likely prevented more serious injuries.
The bus operator was the only person hurt. Red Cross paramedics treated him at the scene and took him to a hospital.
Investigators determined that the driver of the Turicun van, identified as Joaquín N., 41, was heading toward Boulevard Colosio when he made an illegal left turn at the intersection and ran a red light. The van was struck on its center-right side by a bus operated by Lipu, causing it to spin and slide several meters before coming to rest facing the bus. The bus sustained damage to its front right side, and both vehicles ended up partially on the median.
Tow trucks removed the vehicles quickly to clear the roadway.
