Sun to Light Up Maya Legacy at El Caracol in Cozumel

Cozumel, Quintana Roo — The sun will once again illuminate El Caracol, an ancient Maya structure at Punta Sur, during an archaeoastronomical phenomenon on Friday that highlights the precision with which the Maya linked their architecture to the movements of celestial bodies.

The island’s Foundation of Parks and Museums invited families and visitors to witness the spectacle at 6 p.m. on Friday, August 28, as the summer vacation season comes to a close. The event is free and open to the public, but advance registration is required by email.

El Caracol dates to the Postclassic period and is adorned with marine snails embedded in its stucco. The Maya used the structure as a navigation marker and astronomical beacon, as well as for observing weather conditions.

During the event, sunlight will pass through the building’s openings, demonstrating once again the connection between the pre-Hispanic construction and the behavior of the sun.
