Seyé, Yucatán — A federal judge has temporarily suspended the use of bullfighting instruments at an event scheduled for August 30 in Seyé, following a legal challenge filed by the animal rights groups Animal Heroes and PETA Latino.
The provisional suspension was granted in response to an amparo, a type of legal protection, brought against the corrida. Animal Heroes said this marks the fourth time it has obtained such a suspension for bullfighting events in Yucatán, with similar rulings in Tixkokob, Temozón, and Muna.
The organizations argue that the use of instruments during bullfights violates animal protection provisions in Article 4 of Mexico’s Constitution and NOM-033, the official standard governing methods for killing domestic and wild animals.
According to Animal Heroes, the ruling is the ninth occasion on which federal judges have granted a provisional suspension in cases the group has brought against practices it considers contrary to animal protection law.
The suspension remains in effect while the judicial process continues, and Animal Heroes said it will keep pursuing legal avenues to denounce animal mistreatment and ensure compliance with animal welfare regulations.
The case adds to a growing legal dispute over bullfighting in Yucatán, where animal welfare organizations have used federal courts to try to restrict certain practices, while supporters of traditional festivities defend the events.
