Hotel Transport Firms Seek Driver Points System in Quintana Roo

Cancún, Quintana Roo — Companies that transport hotel and tourism staff in Cancún are calling for a statewide points system on driver’s licenses to keep operators with repeated infractions or accident records from moving between employers without consequences.

The proposal is aimed at closing a loophole that currently allows drivers to quit one company after accumulating fines or being involved in crashes, then get hired by another firm with no record of their history.

Cristian Guerrero, of the transport company Grupo Selva Maya, said employers are the ones who end up bearing the risk. He argued that licenses should carry a points system that deducts credits for each administrative violation or accident, eventually reaching a threshold that would bar a driver from continuing to work.

Guerrero also pointed to a shortage of properly trained drivers for staff transport, citing a lack of specialized schools where operators can train from scratch. While some companies offer in-house training, he said it typically covers only the type of bus a driver will operate, given the differences between vehicles.

Separately, Guerrero said the destination’s tourism slowdown has hit the sector, with staff transport activity down roughly 20 percent amid lower visitor numbers and hotel closures.

The proposal comes as public transit gaps continue to affect hotel employees. In September 2025, with construction underway on the third section of the hotel zone, public buses stopped running past Kilometer 20 of Bulevar Kukulcán, leaving more than 5,000 Cancún hotel workers without service.
