Chetumal, Quintana Roo — Producers from across Mexico formally established the National Association of Bamboo Producers of Mexico on Friday in Chetumal, creating an organization aimed at strengthening the cultivation, processing and sale of a crop with growing potential in construction, tourism and decoration.
Juan Ruiz Torres, who heads the organization in Quintana Roo, said growers must move beyond raw material production and into processing in order to raise the profitability of the crop. He noted that bamboo can be used to build palapas, structures and furniture, including tables and chairs, as well as a range of decorative items — openings that allow producers to add value and reach new markets.
The association’s goals include supporting producers, spreading knowledge about how to grow and use bamboo, and building a supply chain that spans Quintana Roo and other parts of the country.
Producers, state liaisons and representatives from Veracruz, Campeche, San Luis Potosí, Colima, Jalisco, Chiapas, Nayarit, Yucatán, Querétaro, Tlaxcala, Mexico City and Quintana Roo attended the meeting, reflecting nationwide interest in developing the industry.
