Cancún, Quintana Roo — The Institute for Social Security and Services for State Workers (ISSSTE) will accelerate construction of several hospitals across Mexico, including the one in Cancún, director Martí Batres said Tuesday.

Speaking at the government’s daily People’s Conference, Batres laid out 12 actions the institute will carry out over the next 120 days and said the Cancún project, currently about 25 percent complete, is among those getting extra attention.

“These works have already begun, but we are going to step on the accelerator,” Batres said, listing other projects that include the Cherán hospital clinic in Michoacán and a full renovation of the Chilpancingo hospital clinic in Guerrero.

Ninety-bed hospital in Cancún

The conversion of the Cancún clinic into a 90-bed general hospital was announced earlier this year. It is being built on the site of the institute’s former store in Region 93 of the city.

Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama welcomed the announcement on social media, thanking President Claudia Sheinbaum “for her support and commitment to driving forward works that improve health services and the well-being of Quintana Roo families.”

Chetumal expansion and new Playa del Carmen unit

The ISSSTE also plans to convert its Chetumal clinic into a general hospital, expanding it from 30 to 90 beds and adding a new mammography machine.

In Playa del Carmen, the institute’s new family medicine unit (UMF) has been in service since January 6, 2026.
