Residents Report Constant Sewage Overflows at Playa del Carmen’s Colosio Crossing

A large puddle fills a depression in cracked, patterned paving stones, reflecting a building and the sky above.

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — Residents of the Luis Donaldo Colosio Murrieta neighborhood say raw sewage has been overflowing repeatedly at the intersection of Quinta Avenida and Avenida Colosio, and they are calling on city officials to intervene.

Neighbors said the overflows occur even on days without rain and that the problem has persisted for several months despite complaints filed with local authorities and with Aguakan, the private company that holds the water and drainage concession for the area.

Neighbors Say Complaints Go Unresolved

Gabriela Rodríguez said the overflow worsens during rain but also occurs in dry weather, and that residents have called Aguakan directly to report it without obtaining a solution so far.

Isidro Paz, another resident of the sector, said the problem has been present for months and that reports made to the authorities have not led to repairs.

The affected section of the sewer network sits on Quinta Avenida at its junction with Avenida Colosio, a busy corner where a range of commercial activity takes place.

Residents asked municipal authorities and the concessionaire to inspect the condition of the drainage network and carry out the work needed to stop wastewater from continuing to rise to the surface.

The complaint echoes other reports of sewage problems across Quintana Roo, including discharges documented near Chetumal’s Barrio Mágico and flooding that persists in parts of Cancún despite the city’s thousands of absorption wells.
