Tulum, Quintana Roo — A video of an Argentine man confronting a Mexican street vendor in the upscale Aldea Zama residential complex has gone viral, igniting a heated debate about discrimination and classism in the Riviera Maya.
The footage, shared on social media, shows the Argentine man blocking the path of a pozol vendor riding a motorcycle. The vendor, who sells a traditional Mayan drink made from cacao, is told he cannot ride his motorcycle on the pedestrian walkway.
“You can’t pass through here, eh. You can’t come through here with a motorcycle. You know it very well. Turn back,” the Argentine says.
When the vendor asks him to step aside so he can turn around and leave, the Argentine refuses and threatens to expose him online.
“Asshole, you don’t live here. Go to your neighborhood, go to your colony… don’t come here,” the Argentine shouts as the vendor drives away.
The clip was originally posted by a local social media account dedicated to the Riviera Maya community, with a caption urging people to support the vendor: “An Argentine was rude to a Mexican selling pozol. If you see our buddy, please buy from him. That drink is delicious, it’s cold and has cacao… We welcome many people of different nationalities here. Be kind.”
The incident has sparked widespread reactions online, with many criticizing the Argentine’s behavior as classist and racist, while others pointed out that the vendor was indeed violating pedestrian rules.
- “In Tulum, the first to treat Mexicans badly are the vendors and taxi drivers.”
- “The pozol guys are local heritage; they work hard all day.”
- “Imagine physically harassing someone, which is illegal, to tell them they’re doing something illegal.”
- “Those of us who have had the bad luck to encounter a reckless person on a motorcycle or electric scooter will agree he did the right thing.”
The debate continues as the video circulates widely, highlighting tensions between locals and foreign residents in the rapidly developing tourist destination.
