Cancún, Quintana Roo — An American man identified as Evans “N” was arrested in the municipality of Benito Juárez after he failed to prove legal status in Mexico and was found to be the subject of an active arrest warrant in Idaho on methamphetamine distribution charges, authorities said.
Officials said the arrest followed investigative work, information-sharing with international agencies and coordination among the Transnational Crimes Unit of the Security and Citizen Protection Department, the Investigation Directorate of the Citizen Security Department and the Mexican Navy.
After confirming that he faced an arrest warrant for extradition purposes in the United States, officials handed the man over to Mexico’s National Migration Institute (INM) so it could carry out the corresponding immigration procedure and arrange his subsequent transfer to U.S. authorities.
Authorities did not release further details about how long the suspect had been in Mexico or where in Benito Juárez he was detained.
