Mérida, Yucatán — Yucatán has recorded six confirmed mpox cases so far in 2026, making it the second-highest state for incidence nationwide, trailing only Mexico City, as the disease maintains a focused but active presence in the country.

According to the latest epidemiological update from the federal Health Department, corresponding to week 15, the state reported two new infections in a single period, placing it among the states with the highest number of recent cases, alongside the capital.

All cases in Yucatán have been in men, with no confirmed cases in women so far, mirroring the national trend. Nationwide, 42 infections have been reported this year, down from 84 cases during all of 2025, but health surveillance remains active.

Peninsular Incidence

In the Yucatán Peninsula region, only Quintana Roo shares the disease’s presence, with five cases, while Campeche remains free of confirmed cases, though under epidemiological monitoring.

Nationally, after Mexico City and Yucatán, states with reported cases include Puebla, State of Mexico, Chihuahua, Guanajuato, and Sonora, all with significantly lower numbers.

Health authorities reiterated calls to reinforce preventive measures, especially avoiding close physical contact — including sexual contact — with infected individuals or those showing suspicious symptoms.

Hygiene Key to Prevention

Officials also recommended extreme caution with personal items, maintaining constant hand hygiene, and limiting exposure in crowded spaces.

Although case numbers remain contained, the recent increase in Yucatán raises alerts about possible active transmission chains, where prevention remains the main control tool.

For those already showing symptoms, health authorities advise isolating at home, avoiding contact with others, and refraining from sexual activity during the illness. If any skin lesion shows redness, swelling, or intense pain, immediate medical attention should be sought.
