Firefighters working to extinguish a fire that destroyed a home in Cancun's Supermanzana 220

Cancun, Quintana Roo — A man’s distraction while boiling beans on a wood fire led to a blaze that destroyed his home in the Supermanzana 220 neighborhood, authorities said. No injuries were reported.

The fire broke out around 7 p.m. on Calle 68 with 93, near Avenidas Leona Vicario and Kabah. Neighbors called 911 after spotting flames, prompting a response from firefighters, municipal civil protection paramedics, and police officers.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze, but not before it consumed most of the home, including furniture, clothing, electronics, and personal belongings. The structure was reduced to ashes.

The homeowner told officials he had left a pot of beans boiling on a wood fire and stepped out briefly to buy tortillas and soda. Neighbors alerted him when they saw smoke, and he returned to find his house engulfed in flames.

Emergency crews worked for several minutes to control the fire, preventing it from spreading to nearby homes. After the scene was secured, they cleared the area. The man lost most of his possessions, but neighbors provided clothing, a mattress, and a fan to help him through the night.
